Moving Cheaply

Moving, its a pain in the ass, but its something everyone has to do at least once; and if you haven't you know someone who has.
I have moved ten times in ten years. I've gone from one apartment in Brooklyn, NY to another apartment in Brooklyn, NY. I've moved from NYC to Upstate NY, from Upstate NY to Washington, D.C. From Washington, D.C. to L.A., CA.
Throughout all of these moves, I've garnered a ton of information about moving. First, I reccommend calling several different moving companies and getting prices. I know that some companies will work with you to get a cheaper price when they know you are price shopping. It's easier to if they come to your apt/house and check out your stuff. that way you get a fair deal. When you just have a conversation via the phone, the estimate is sometimes different then when they actually move your stuff. I also reccommend packing your own stuff. It only takes a few hours, and its worth the save in cash.
If possible, I also reccomend driving your own UHaul. When I went from the East Coast to the West Coast, I had my stuff driven for me. But for all my short moves, I drove my own Uhaul. I even hitched my car to the back of the Uhaul. It took forever to drive, but it was a fun experience in the end. I didn't over estimate my strength however, and hired movers to load and unload the uhaul. It saved me hundreds of dollars.
When I moved to L.A. I had my own movers. It was an expensive move, and my furniture and car was late. I ended up having to write my own contract up with the movers, telling them that if my stuff was late, I wanted a rebate. they understand that some things are not delivered on time, but after a certain amount of lateness, you have to stick up for yourself and be prepared to fight for your things. I couldn't sleep on the floor forever, I needed my bed!
I also reccommend getting your friends to help you. They are great at moving things, cleaning and packing etc. It's what friends are for, to help you out.
So, moving can be stressfull, but once its over, its not so bad. And don't forget to label everything, otherwise unpacking isnt much fun.
So Good Luck Movers!
