Finding A Job
Presently, I am a Temp Employee at a Firm in the New York City Area. I have been a temp employee now for appox. 9 months. While it is beneficial to have this job (it pays the bills and keeps me busy), it is not what I want to be doing for the rest of my life. I have my Masters Degree, and while some people like to be secretarys (there is nothing wrong with the profession), I would love to work in the world of non-profit. I have learned a lots of things in my years searching for a job. First, it is the people you know that will help you in getting a job, moreso then what you know. Make as many connections as you can; this will be very beneficial to you in the future. Find out whose on top, and become their friend. Secondly, get your name out there. Post your resumes on as many sites as you can. Search everyday for a job, no matter where it is. Use your connections to get more names of who to send your resume to. Thirdly, informational interviews are great! They may not get you a specific job, but it can't hurt to meet new people and send them your resume. I have a friend at Columbia University. I met him through a friend of mine. He asked me to come into his Office and meet with him. Through him, I was able to meet several people in my field and make more connections. Now, everytime there is a job opening, they are sent my resume and I'm called for interviews. Fourth, Volunteering is good. Find the Organization you want to work in, and volunteer for them. It's hard work, going to work full-time and then volunteering, but its so beneficial! Once a position opens up in that organization, they'll know you by name, and you'll be first in line for the job. Organizations love to hire within. Fifth, Be positive. It's hard when your shot down for jobs, but as my wise roommate once told me, it only takes one. Sooner rather then later, a Job will be offered to you. Sixth, Smile. It Changes Brain Chemisty and it makes you look like you want the job. Be positive, and tell them that you want the job, and you know you can be good at it. Seventh, Do research for the position. Companies love it when you know all about them, and are prepared for the interviews. Eighth, Dress to kill. Look great in your suit and look put together. No one wants to hire someone who looks messy. Nine, Most importantly, send a thank you note. I've done research on this, and found that email thank you notes are ok to send. It gets to them quicker then snail mail will. Sending thank you notes are very important. It shows them that you want the job. And don't forget to followup with a phone call to ask if they need anything else from you. Good Luck Job Hunting! |
